When it comes to how to lose weight fast and healthy, what you will see recommended most of the time is exercise. But the question is, with more people exercising today than ever before, and with obesity at an all time high, are we sure that we have the answer? If exercise is the only cure for being overweight and obese, why do more and more people keep getting fat, even those who work out? Recent research has revealed that in addition to exercise, there is something fundamental we have to do – we have to eliminate sugar from our diets.

Sugar wasn’t very popular about 70 years ago. Back then, it was found in very few products. But as manufacturers were soon to find out, it could be used to make so many things taste different, sweeter, so that more consumers would buy them. Today, 80% of food items found in supermarkets contain sugar. That is an astounding statistic! By why, some might ask, don’t 80% of things that we buy in supermarkets taste sweet? It is because manufacturers have learned how to manipulate the sugar and disguise it completely. A good example is regular old ketchup. Do you know that it contains sugar? In fact, up to a quarter of the bottle is nothing but sugar. Your mayonnaise too is loaded with the stuff (you shouldn’t worry about fat so much as you should worry about sugar).

So what should you do?

That means that as a consumer you have to smarten up. Start by finding out how many different names sugar has so that you can read labels better. Once you know them, avoid products that contain them. You may have a hard time at first because sugar is addictive. It is, in fact, more addictive than cocaine. Mice that were given the option between cocaine and sugar chose cocaine every time. You have to be prepared to “quit”. You will feel the effects of getting rid of sugar from your life but they don’t last forever – they will go away in about a week or two. Look on the bright side – by this time you will be losing weight already.

Once you quit sugar it is time to focus on your diet. What you consume is very important – you have to eat 3 meals a day comprised of healthy proteins, healthy carbohydrates and fruits and vegetables. You should buy lean beef, chicken, fish, turkey, whole grain breads, healthy pastas and more. Always have fresh fruits and vegetables handy – you need to eat at least 5 servings a day.

What about exercise?

Needless to say that exercise should be a part of your life – it is very important for optimal health and also for mental wellbeing. Exercise will keep your heart in good condition for many years. It also gives you a well-toned and nicely shaped body. There are also mental benefits of exercise – you can relieve things like anxiety by going out for a jog or hitting the gym for a couple of hours.

Rest is important too…

It is a fast world that we live in today. Many people have to hold two jobs just to make ends meet. Families have to be taken care of – kids have to be prepared and taken to school, there are meetings to attend, friends to see, endless chores and more. In the midst of all this sleep is forgotten. Often, people find themselves sleeping for only 4 or 5 hours every night. If this is your life you are putting yourself at the risk of being overweight and even obese.

Research has shown that people who don’t get enough sleep put on more weight than is necessary. This is because they tend to be stressed. When you are stressed your body produces a hormone called cortisol which in turn makes you have cravings for carbs and fats. When you satisfy those cravings the carbs are turned into fat which is stored in the body. Over time, you will indeed be either overweight or obese.

You can avoid all this by making sure that you get to bed on time every night. Sleep for at least 6 hours every night to ensure that you are well rested.
