How to get kids to lose weight

Many children today are overweight – diet, combined with a sedentary life have cause many kids around the world to gain more weight than is healthy. As a parent, it is your duty to ensure that your child does well, not just in school but also in terms of health. That said, you cannot force them to lose weight or even chide them into it – if you are not careful you will make them self conscious and this can lead to anxiety, depression and lack of confidence. The issue of how to get kids to lose weight needs to be approached carefully if parents want to succeed.

The first step is to understand how they gained the extra weight in the first place. Sugar is usually the main culprit in most cases – children are eating more and more foods that contain sugar. It is up to you to find out what foods contain sugar in your home and get rid of them. You should do it quickly too – sugar is addictive and the longer your kids eats it in different foods the more likely they are to get addicted to it. This would mean that they remain overweight for the rest of their lives. What else should yo9u do?

Be a role model yourself

It is no good to tell your child to adopt good habits if you don’t practice them yourself. If you want your child to be active and eat a healthier diet you have to do it yourself. You should show them that being outdoors is fun. You can go and play in the park, go for a swim, go hiking or camping – whatever you choose, it is better than sitting in front of the TV or playing video games all day.

You should also let them see you put effort to bring healthier meals home. Let them come shopping with you and explain to them why you are on the produce isle and not on the snacks isle – tell them that fruits and veggies are much better for them. Prepare meals at home and let them help you – it will get them in the habit of eating home-cooked meals which is a very healthy one. Many kids are averse to vegetables but yours don’t have to be; there are many fun ways to prepare them that make them interesting and delicious for kids.

Get your kids to be active

There is no substitute for physical activity for children – they simply have to be out there playing and having fun. The problem is that too many kids today are sedentary. Their parents let them sit about and absorb hours of TV and video games every day. People are also much more suspicious today than they were in the past – today, people are so worried about strangers that they would rather keep their kids indoors. Whatever your particular circumstances you have to find a way for your kids to get at least 60 minutes of play every day. Start early so that they know that it is part of life to be out and about playing. In addition to that, if your kids see you working out it will be much easier for them to do it – kids usually do what they see their parents doing.

Improve your diet in the home

We already talked about getting rid of products that contain sugar in the home (don’t forget juice and sodas). You should make a point of ensuring that most of what you consume is not processes. Each meal should contain unprocessed proteins, carbohydrates and vitamins. You should focus on providing lean meats such as beef, chicken and fish, healthy bread and pasta and lots of fruits and vegetables. For breakfast, avoid cereal at all costs – it has too much sugar. Instead, provide foods like oatmeal, porridge, eggs and so on. You should also teach your kids the value of hydrating – they should drink lots of water every day.

Let them get enough rest

Life has become so competitive that kids are getting swept up in it. Today, it isn’t unusual to find kids studying into the middle of the night and waking up too early in the morning. If you want to avoid the risk of obesity you must let your kids get enough sleep every night. They should be in bed by 8pm and wake up at 7am.
