We see them online and in magazines all the time – ads that promise women that they will lose 10 pounds or more in a week? Is it possible and if yes, it is safe?
The question of how much weight is too much to lose is not a new one – it has existed for many years and doctors and researchers have managed to work out just what the limits are.
If you are a healthy individual, you will be safe losing no more than 2 pounds a week. If you lose weight any faster than that you are taking huge risks and may even be putting yourself at risk.
Symptoms that you are losing too much weight too fast
Symptoms include nausea, stomach problems such as diarrhea and constipation, fatigue (you want to sleep all the time) hair loss and many people also develop gall stones. The biggest concern, however, is malnutrition. This usually occurs if you are getting only 800 calories or less a day.
Your body will not receive the nutrients that it needs to be in proper form. You can tell that you suffer from malnutrition if you become very thin, have dizzy spells, feel like lying in bed all day and have no energy at all.
What is the alternative?
Although weight loss is your goal you should not starve your body to achieve it – you will harming your body just as you were when you were overweight. Instead, you should eat 3 meals a day, each comprised of a lean protein, a healthy carb and lots of vitamins.
The thing that you should eliminate is sugar, which is in most of the things that you eat. Examine your diet and pick out every little thing that contains even just a bit of sugar. If you get rid of all of them you will notice that your weight will drop drastically.
